SYS-CON Publishing Director Jeremy Geelan led and moderated a Real-World AJAX Power Panel at the inaugural Real-World AJAX Seminar in New York. The panel included Adobe's Christophe Coenraets, Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson, Yahoo's Bill Scott, Web 2.0 expert Dion Hinchcliffe, and "Father of Ajax" Jesse James Garrett (pictured). The panel presented their individual views on AJAX, and fielded a number of questions from audience members about company strategies, the future of browsers, the ways AJAX could be put to use, and other topics.
Hansson also expressed enthusiasm for the recent momentum behind AJAX. "We now have a 'brand sticker' (for AJAX)," Hansson pointed out during the panel. "We now have something that people can get behind and go with. You need a good name and focus points, plus the enthusiasm to do something about it."
And Conraets noted that although "the name doesn't really matter, what really matters is that this is serious. Whether (one calls it) AJAX or RIA, end-users will enjoy (what we're creating with) it." He also pointed out that there is "a spectrum between content on one side and applications on the other side, so developers need to identify what they are building."
Scott agreed, saying "we see a blending between the web and client applications. The key thing real interactivity and the social aspect of reaching across the network...we used to build interfaces with people talking to a computer, and now we're building interfaces with people talking to each other."
Scott also remarked on the Web 2.0 aspect of the AJAX development spectrum and the role it plays in delivering AJAX-developed applications to end-users. Hinchcliffe, whose popular blog at SYS-CON has reached more than one million readers so far this year, pointed out that "AJAX is essentially the face of Web 2.0."
