OpenAjax member representatives have just concluded two days of meetings hosted by member company Adobe. The members all gathered in the area during the JavaOne 2006 conference in San Francisco.
They emerged with an important semantic change from referring to OpenAjax as a collaboration to calling it the OpenAjax Alliance. They also decided to focus on interoperability as the main challenge facing them in their efforts to build momentum behind AJAX.
Nexaweb is among the OpenAjax members, and founder/CTO Coach Wei (pictured) attended the meetings. He stopped by the SYS-CON.TV booth at JavaOne to offer some specific observations. Most importantly, he stressed, “We are not trying to create a standards body like W3C, we are not trying to create a product.” All Alliance members are making the focus on interoperability “a high priority,” he said.
He said that “we all have to define exactly what interoperability means” but also noted that there are several very specific issues within each company to address.
He said members did not have a specific, hard deadline for determining when all interoperability issues will be solved to everyone’s satisfaction. He added that they are looking at “maybe a six-month timeframe” to make substantial progress in this area. He said that members will be holding weekly or bi-weekly online meetings and conference calls to update one another collectively.
Additionally, Wei stressed, “The open source component is critical (to OpenAjax), (including) how to work with Apache and Eclipse, who both know how to do it. When asked about competitive issues within Alliance members, Wei offered the opinion that “we all believe we need to build momentum behind AJAX at this point.”
As a consequence of this mindset, it’s way too early to think about any sort of consolidation among the various tools and frameworks being offered, he said. (This topic has been discussed in numerous conversations among developers and vendors at JavaOne, with the consensus seeming to be that tools and frameworks will not consolidate in the near future at least, but in fact continue to proliferate, because there are still myriad improvements that developers would like to see.)
IBM has made the first major announcements of OpenAjax, and Blue’s David Boloker remains an unofficial leader of the Alliance, according to Wei. But he stressed that there is no formal structure or leadership within this community, and no plans for a formal structure at this point.
